Modern, busy family lifestyles don't leave much time for stopping to appreciate either the people or the world around you. The Tutuka Family Conservation Project is a chance for you to do just that.

Based near to the Kruger National Park in South Africa you will work on both conservation and community initiatives. The project name comes from the Zulu word meaning ‘to grow’, and it is designed for your family to work together and help the growth of the fragile ecosystems, disadvantaged communities and, in turn, your own family.

Conservation In Action

Not only will you all get to see some of the world's most stunning animals, you will also work together with your loved ones to help in their conservation. Research of the areas surrounding the Kruger National Park is essential in helping to ensure the continued protection of animals in the area, and funding from the project is vital in supporting our entire range of conservation initiatives.

Work With The Wildlife

The project will focus on movements of species including elephant, rhino and buffalo, both into and out of the Kruger National Park. Your whole family will discover and explore bush ecosystems, in a way suited to your age - so from youngster to grown-up, there is something to learn. The work is variable, but can include the following:

  • establishing territory size of and producing IDs for rhino.
  • recording seasonal and migratory movements of buffalo.
  • recording elephant movements, behaviour and herd dynamics.
  • recording movements, hunting and feeding behaviour of predators including lion, leopard and cheetah.
  • Manual work, suited to all ages, to restore land

The project will also include a few days working in the local Acorn-Hoek community with Nholwasi Community Project, helping at an orphan settlement to renovate and rebuild homes, as well as visiting some of the attractions the area has to offer.
