I have never travelled to Africa before so I was incredibly curious to see what it was like first-hand. I also have a strong interest in Biology and this trip seemed like it would be the perfect opportunity to see how this classroom subject is applied in real life. It was exciting to have the chance to blend my academic interests with an incredible adventure.
I think one of the most memorable experiences on this trip was seeing a pangolin (one of my favourite animals), which I never thought I’d get to see in person! We also spotted quite a few owls, which was cool.
We even saw a cheetah up close in the wild which was a thrilling experience!
Besides the amazing sightings we had, this trip has been eye-opening. I feel like I have a better understanding of Johannesburg, South African culture, and the country's wildlife conservation efforts. It’s been enlightening to see how wildlife is regulated and protected here. I feel like I have gained a wealth of knowledge about animal anatomy and behaviours too, and I’m looking forward to applying this knowledge in my Biology classes.
The practical insights I’ve gained here go beyond what you can find in textbooks so, in my opinion, the experience is incredibly valuable!
If there are any other students thinking about joining a trip like this I’d encourage them not to overthink it and just go for it. Travelling to another continent and staying in a camp for two weeks can seem daunting, especially if you’re not used to sleeping in tents, but the experience is truly unique and unforgettable.
It’s definitely worth stepping out of your comfort zone for.
I have really enjoyed spending time with my friends in a completely different environment but I’m excited to go home and share with my family some of the interesting facts and pictures of the animals and the country, which I am sure they will love. The stories and experiences from this trip will stay with me for a lifetime.
